ENGLISH FIRST ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
This is a subject for university exemption.
APPROACH
We teach mainly communicative skills, with the emphasis on speaking, reading, writing and listening in curriculum context and continuous assessment.
SYLLABUS
The main categories are oral (listening, speaking, reading), language structures, visual literacy, comprehension,
literature, poetry and creative and transactional writing.
SUBJECT ACTIVITIES
Public Speaking, English Debate, a variety of writing competitions such as the Klofie Arts Festival and external Creative Writing Competitions, Spelling Bee, Poetry Club and English Olympiad.
CAREER POSSIBILITIES
Proficiency in English is indispensable for tertiary education and for navigating various career paths.

APPROACH
English Home Language focuses on developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, with an emphasis on insight and practical application. Learners are exposed to a wide variety of literary genres.
English Home Language ensures a proficiency level in language that reflects advanced interpersonal communication skills required in social situations, as well as the cognitive academic skills essential for further university studies.
Additionally, English Home Language equips learners with literary, aesthetic, and imaginative abilities, empowering them to recreate, imagine, and enhance their understanding of the world they inhabit.
CURRICULUM
The main sub-divisions are literature (novel and drama), poetry, visual literacy, language, writing and oral (speaking, reading, listening) skills. These are integrated in presentations and projects that encourage critical thinking, self-study and research.
SUBJECT ACTIVITIES
There is also opportunity to enter the English Olympiad and Spelling Bee, be part of the Poetry Club, excursions to watch Shakespeare plays on stage and a variety of writing competitions such as the Klofie Arts Festival and external creative writing competitions.
CAREER POSSIBILITIES
Digital copywriter, Web content manager, journalist, translator, diplomat, radio and TV presenter, teacher, lecturer, writer, playwright, public relations officer, lawyer, as well as any other career where a command of the English language is vital. With English Home Language, possibilities open for a learner to study overseas.
